Cherry Laurels: A Field Guide

Cherry laurels bloom in spring and an easy way to remember the habits of this evergreen flowering shrub is to memorize the line from A.E. Housman’s poem To an Athlete Dying Young: “And early though the laurel grows, It withers quicker than the rose.”

They spread quickly, and densely, especially in moist climates and can become invasive if not kept in check.

The good news is that among the plant’s 40 or so cultivars are well-behaved varieties to grow as hardy hedges, screens, and ground cover.

Germination Guide

Stratification - as a cold hardy plant, Cherry Laurel seeds benefit from cold stratification to improve germination rates.

To do this, wash the seeds then soak them in water for 24 hours. Then drain and mix with a little damp compost and place in a small zip-lock bag.

Place in the fridge for 60-90 days.

Alternatively, you can do it the natural way - sow the seeds in pots of free-draining compost mix, cover with mesh to keep wildlife out and leave outside over winter.

After the stratification, sow in pots or seed trays filled with a well-draining potting mix.

Sow about 1cm deep and cover

Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

Water from the bottom

Place the seed tray in a warm location with indirect sunlight.

Germination may take from 2-12 weeks, so some patience required
